NON-STEROIDAL DERMATOLOGY TREATMENTS
NAPC Sring 2008 The skin is the largest organ of the body. It consists of three main layers, three types of glands, and millions of cells, weighing in at approx. 5o/o of a persons weight.

It is also the largest eliminatory organ of the body. The skin serves as the body's second bowl, third kidney and third lung. It is a two-way membrane. Toxins are eliminated through the skin by perspiration and absorbed through the skin into the body's circulatory system, through sweat glands,
sebaceous glands and hair follicles. About 50% of what is applied to the skin enters into the circulatory system. Steroid based skin treatments generally
also consist of a cocktail of chemicals and long term use not only can thin the skin but also can lead to skin atrophy, rosacea, and inhibition of melanocyte activity. Some even can have possible direct or indirect toxic consequences. Steroidal treatments are immuno suppressants. lt may reduce the
symptoms but does not deal with the causes. When coming off those treatments
generally the skin disorder comes back with vengeance. Prescribing them i.e. choice of
product and strength is often on a trial and error basts.
lt is therefore not surprising that 72% of patients are worried about using topical
steroids or corticosteroids and that 24% of patients admitted to having been noncompliant with prescribed treatments...
